MAKALAPUA KANUHA
Director of Culture

Led by our inspirational leader, Maka has a passion, for what she believes is our kuleana; to preserve the Hawaiian culture through education and empowerment. As the cultural compass of our resort, assuring that everything we do is pono and makes cultural sense.

Born and raised on the Island of Oahu, she has traveled to many places around the world and all over the United States sharing the spirit of aloha through song, dance, mo`olelo (story), and ‘oli (chant). Makalapua is very well known in Hawai’i and abroad as a Hawaiian singer, entertainer, and cultural ambassador who has a wealth of knowledge in Na Mea Hawai’i (things that are Hawaiian).

In 2010, Maka began to guide the resort to better understand the Hawaiian culture by implementing several cultural activities and in 2015 opened our Pu’uhonua Cultural Center where she holds ukulele lessons, Hawaiian language classes and is often found talking- story with guests or welcoming guests with a chant (oli) to mark special guest moments. Her Aloha spirit, knowledge and powerful storytelling bring them an authentic experience that truly moves them.

At The Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas, Hawaiian culture is, “the puka,” or the doorway into our home.

Aloha and Welcome Home.
